A Rose by Any Other Name
September is here and it still feels like we are inside a terrarium. No fall leaves on the horizon. And fungus does not count as fall foliage; it is just another name for mold in my book! Apologies to Carl Linnaeus and all those repulsed by puns.
However, names ARE important, as are titles of books.
Strolling through the stacks of the library, scrolling through Amazon’s endless selections, or meandering all over Chamblin’s and The Book Nook, books only get one chance to grab our interest.
It is all about the title. This month I encourage you to invoke your inner bard and read a book that “that by any other name” would still be a great book.
Would you have read The Great Gatsby if it was called The High Bouncing Lover? And, no, I didn’t make that up. Do you feel some books titles’ have missed the mark? Okay, Shakespeare, what would be your alternative title?
Email your alternative titles, literary musings and all bookish thoughts to Stacey Goldring at firstname.lastname@example.org, then listen in 9:00 am, Tuesday, Sept. 15.
Some titles for your consideration:
Joseph Heller’s Catch 11 or Catch 18 or Catch 22
War or Paradise by Toni Morrison
They Don’t Build Statues to Businessman or Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann
Fiesta or The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
Here’s how the book club works:
The Jacksonville Public Library and WJCT teamed up to create First Coast Connect Book Club for library and literature lovers. WJCT’s First Coast Connect book blogger Stacey Goldring discusses engaging books and invites you to join in the conversation, discuss your opinions, and add ideas to the literary discussion.
Each month a specific book or a selection of books will be chosen to be discussed. Check out the book(s) at any Jacksonville Public Library, or purchase the books at The Book Nook or Chamblin’s. Mention you’re with the First Coast Connect Book Club and get a discount.
After you’ve read the book, or books from the suggested book list, or pondered the topic of the week, tell us what you think at email@example.com. Share any questions, emotions, memories or ideas that you have about the book. Stacey and host Melissa Ross will discuss the books and share your comments on First Coast Connect or tune in at 9 a.m. on Sept. 15 to 89.9.FM WJCT’s First Coast Connect and call 549-2937.
First Coast Connect airs every weekday at 9 a.m. on 89.9 WJCT-FM.
