Library employees innovate to help the visually impaired

Chris Eaton and Luis Terron show off their innovation.

When Jacksonville Public Library employees Chris Eaton and Luis Terron discovered that navigating restrooms can be disorienting and unpleasant for the blind and visually impaired, they set out to find a solution.

The result was a unique 3-D model of the restroom that can be touched before entering to locate all the necessities in a sanitary and pleasant manner. The innovation drew the attention of reporter Michelle Corum, WJCT 89.9 FM. Hear the story that aired about two of our own as they showcased their 3-D model at the Main Library on Thursday, Jan. 28, during the 2016 Florida Regional Braille Challenge, an academic contest for blind and visually challenged students.

Congratulations to Chris, Talking Books/Special Needs librarian, and Luis, e-library specialist, for your creativity and caring!
