First Coast Connect & JPL Book Club: A Confederacy of Dunces

First Coast Connect & Jax Library Book Club: A Confederacy of Dunces
April 19 @ 9 a.m. – Discussion on First Coast Connect, 89.9 WJCT – FM

With the election season in high gear and both parties having their own issues regarding their nominee, it is time to call in a literary knight in shining armor. Meet Ignatius J. Riley, a force unto himself. The entertainment value, at present, of the presidential candidates pales in comparison to the belly-busting laughter you’ll experience reading about the protagonist of the Pulitzer-Prize winning novel, A Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole.

Confederacy of DuncesNo, this is not the title of CNN or Fox’s next debate, rather it is a fantastically funny journey into the bowels of the French Quarter as seen through the hysterical perspective of Ignatius, America’s first blogger, filling voluminous volumes of his signature notebooks with his acerbic view of American society.

With a spin of Fortuna’s Wheel, the reader is taken on a wild ride involving weenie wagons; a police officer, suffering from a cold and condemned to counter surveillance lodge next to a public commode; a burlesque show involving a parrot; a scam involving orphans who are definitely not; a factory revolt gone awry; and assaults with a folk. These are just snippets of this gut-busting belly laugh of a romp through the debauchery of the Quarter as seen by Ignatius, who believes a good bit of theology and geometry can solve anything.

Toole uses each character as metaphors for our crazy country’s gumbo of quintessentially American personalities.

Read it for laughter. Read it for an elixir. Read it with ketchup and mustard.

Just read A Confederacy of Dunces and enjoy.
