Job Fair Tips for Success

Searching for a job can be scary. The tasks that go along with the hunt can all be very daunting and overwhelming if you don’t equip yourself with the knowledge to succeed. Luckily, the Jacksonville Public Library is here to relieve your stress with the Young Adult Job Fair on June 14. Attending a job fair is one great way to network with hiring companies in your area. Job fairs allow you to meet potential employers all under one roof for the day. Here are a few tips to ensure you impress at the job fair.

First Impressions Are Everything

Your shutterstock_102845183appearance and how you greet the potential employer is your first impression. And as we all know, first impressions are everything. So make the extra effort that day on your appearance and clothing. Brush your hair and make sure facial hair is kept short and groomed. Choose a professional outfit; shirt tucked in, slacks and a tie for men and conservative blouse, pants or skirt for women. Girls, if you choose to wear heels, make sure the height is comfortable to walk around in and stand in for long periods of time. You want to be remembered by your professional appearance and resume, not from being helped out after rolling an ankle!

Greet employers with a firm handshake and smile. Introduce yourself confidently and express your gratitude to them for attending the job fair. Show interest in their company by asking questions like, “What are you looking in an applicant?” and, “What do you like best about working for this company?”

Do Your Research

It is usually easy to obtain a list of employers attending the job fair ahead of time. Check out the YA Job Fair Employer Map here to ensure you make the most of your time at the Jacksonville Public Library job fair. Take the time to research open positions online with the companies you are interested working for. Recruiters are more likely to remember you and be impressed with you if you go in knowing something about their company and show genuine interest. Companies want to hire people who want to work for them.

The Jacksonville Public Library offers extensive online resources for searching jobs. The CareerSourceCareerSource Northeast Florida staff provides their expertise to the Main Library and other library locations with online job searches, resume writing, interview coaching, and referrals to other agencies and organizations. All libraries also offer free, public computer access, with your library card, to conduct this research and job search online. Already have access to a computer? All you need is your library card to access the endless career resources on the library’s.

Streamline Your Resume

When applying to jobs it is important to tailor your resume to the job you are applying for. But what about your resume for a job fair? The important thing for a job fair resume is to keep it concise. Employers will be meeting dozens of candidates and receiving a resume no doubt from each one. Keeping your resume to one-page, with the main information easy to pick out, will help ensure the employer reads it.

The Jacksonville Public Library offers free, live help online through Brain Fuse JobNow. The website offers one-to-one live resume assistance, as well as, downloadable resume templates. Use your library card to set up an account and get started.

Follow Up

Just handing the employer your beautiful and concise resume is not enough. Request a business card from the person you speak with at each booth and write a few notes about the conversation you had. Send them an email or thank you card referencing your conversation and where you met them to jog their memory. Follow up within 48 hours of the job fair.

Also consider creating a free professional networking profile on LinkedIn and connecting with the employers you met to keep up with their company and future openings.
