Jacksonville Public Library & WJCT First Coast Connect Virtual Book Club
Tuesday, June 14, Live on WJCT 89.9 FM @ 9 a.m.
(Book discussion begins around 9:30 a.m.)
How does the use of dialects, jargon, coinage, foreign language affect your reading experience? Do you just go with the flow? Search the meaning of every word? Give up or give in?
This thought-provoking discussion is a natural progression from the FCC Book Club’s Tuesday, May 10 discussion about A Brief History of Seven Killings, in which author Marlon James masterfully employs this difficult literary device.
Join the discussion! Check out these selected titles based on spoken-isms, from the colloquial to Shakespearean, from Jamaica to Cyberspace:
A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz
A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole

Here’s how the Book Club works:
WJCT’s First Coast Connect book blogger Stacey Goldring discusses engaging books and invites you to join in the conversation, discuss your opinions, and add ideas to the literary discussion.
At the end of each month, next month’s book title will be announced. Check out a copy at any Jacksonville Public Library, or purchase a copy at The Book Nook or Chamblin’s. Mention you’re with the First Coast Connect Book Club and get a discount.
After you’ve read the book, tell us what you think of the book at firstname.lastname@example.org. Share any questions, emotions, memories or ideas that it triggered. At the end of the month, Stacey and host Melissa Ross will discuss the book and share comments during First Coast Connect.
